The Dresden University of Technology realized the "11th International Spring Seminar on Electronics Technology" from May 15th to 20th, 1988, in a guest house in Karsdorf - about twenty kilometers from Dresden - with the main subject "Progress and Education in Surface Mounted Technology", organized by Prof. Sauer.

47 participants from 5 nations discussed the use of the new SMD components, especially the technological challenges for the technology of printed circuit boards, for assembly, for soldering, and for testing. The design of printed circuit boards, the quality control and the reliability analysis were subjects of this seminar, too. The influence of surface mounted technology on the education at the universities of technology was an important point in all presentations and discussions. 24 papers were printed in the proceedings of this Seminar.
